An open dictionary on a farm office desk
Plain meaning
The kilograms of feed needed to produce one kilogram of live weight
How to use it
Feed is the largest cost in broilers, pigs and feedlot cattle, so the FCR decides whether a batch makes money before price is considered. Run a realistic FCR through the batch calculator before buying stock.
South African benchmark
South Africa's intensive poultry and pig sectors compete on feed conversion because feed is their largest cost (Article 68).
